After several days of heavy flooding lasting more than a week, stagnant water decomposed and began emitting a foul odor that seeped into the passenger cabin, creating a strong, persistent bad smell. This odor cannot be eliminated by simply drying, spraying fragrances, or ozone treatment.
Why is the odor so strong and difficult to remove?
The cabin floor consists of a top carpet layer, synthetic fibers above sound insulation and heat absorption materials, and a dense felt or foam pad compressed beneath the carpet. This foam acts like a "water-absorbing sponge." When contaminated water rich in organic matter and bacteria seeps in, the foam retains the water and creates an anaerobic environment that leads to decay. This becomes a breeding ground for bacteria and mold. The longer it is left untreated, the more foul-smelling gases are produced.
The chassis and wiring
The metal chassis panels, equipped with sound-damping rubber sheets, serve as mounting points for wiring harnesses, ECU connectors, airbag sensors (SRS sensors), and ground points. If these are not dismantled, the contaminated water trapped under the foam will cause the odor to persist indefinitely. It can also cause chassis panels to rust and electrical connectors to develop salt-like corrosion deposits, potentially leading to long-term electrical short circuits.
The proper repair procedure
Cut the power by disconnecting the battery's negative terminal first.
Because wiring plugs under the seats—such as airbag sensors and seatbelt warning systems—must be unplugged, failing to cut power before removing seats will cause the Airbag warning light to remain active. Remove all lower interior parts: front and rear seats, center console, door trim plastics, and floor carpets. Remove them from the vehicle for external cleaning.
Separate and treat the carpet and sound insulation layers. Inspect the felt or foam sound-absorbing pad beneath the carpet. If it is contaminated with foul water, remove the old felt and replace it immediately, as the fibers retain contaminated water making disinfection and odor removal very difficult. These parts are relatively inexpensive.
Carpet cleaning
Use high-pressure water to rinse mud and dirt from carpet fibers. Apply cleaning agents that break down organic matter or enzymes, or disinfectants such as a mixture of Dettol and laundry detergent. Scrub thoroughly. Use a wet vacuum or carpet extractor to remove water and dirt, drying as much as possible. Dry the carpet completely under strong sunlight. If the carpet is reinstalled before being fully dry, the musty odor will return immediately.
Clean and restore the car floor beneath the carpet
Wipe and clean the chassis floor panels using disinfectants to remove any residual contaminated water and adhesive dampers, ensuring no foul residues remain.
Electrical system inspection
Check wiring harnesses and connectors on the floor. If exposed to contaminated water, clean them with electrical contact cleaner spray, then dry thoroughly with compressed air to prevent salt buildup. Inspect rubber grommets sealing drainage holes under the vehicle to ensure they remain tightly sealed.
Eliminate residual odors in the air conditioning system and cabin
Replace the air filter, since mold spores and odors can circulate inside the evaporator coil and air filter. After reinstalling the dry carpet and seats, perform ozone or high-temperature steam treatments to kill residual bacteria and odors trapped in the headliner and air ducts.
Precautions
Do not use perfumes or air fresheners to mask the odor. The fragrance will mix with the contaminated water smell, creating an even more unpleasant scent. Do not leave the car closed with windows up under the sun to dry; heat accelerates bacterial growth under the carpet. Moisture from the contaminated water will evaporate and settle on the headliner, causing stains and pervasive foul odors. If left more than 3–5 days, mold will spread to seats and seatbelt straps. It is essential to promptly take the car to a professional car care service that offers "complete carpet removal and cleaning."
