The workshop owner confessed he was ordered to dismantle and erase the chassis number of the vehicle used in the ambush shooting of MP Kamonsak. A former naval sergeant was also involved. The Police Region 9 Commander revealed that arrest warrants have been issued for four individuals, and two more suspects are still being sought.
The incident involved unknown assailants using a white four-door pickup truck of unknown make and license plate as a vehicle to follow and shoot at Mr. Kamonsak Leewamo, 59, a Member of Parliament from the Prachachat Party representing Narathiwat's 5th district. He was traveling in a black Toyota car registered in Yala, returning from Hat Yai Airport.
The attack occurred on 20 Mar 2026 in front of a residence in Bajoh Subdistrict, Bajoh District, Narathiwat. Two people were injured: Mr. Uchlam Kole, 55, the driver, and Police Sergeant Major Harirak Himminah, 43, a police officer assigned to protect the MP, who was critically wounded by gunfire from the assailants.
On 4 Apr 2026, investigators revealed that the workshop owner who dismantled the white four-door pickup used in the shooting of MP Kamonsak had been questioned. Known as Mr. Sunthorn, he denied involvement in the shooting but admitted to dismantling the Toyota Vigo pickup following contact from one of the gunmen, a former marine. On the night of the incident, two men brought the vehicle to his workshop and instructed him to deliver it to the former marine’s house. Mr. Sunthorn only realized the vehicle’s connection to the MP shooting after the news broke, confirming that the ex-marine had ordered the vehicle’s dismantling.
Mr. Sunthorn began dismantling the vehicle one to two days after the incident at his workshop located in a palm plantation. The vehicle was taken apart piece by piece, with some parts sold and others kept. He was instructed by the former marine to erase the chassis number and separate the vehicle’s frame. The former marine then ceased contact and was later taken into custody. Of the two men who delivered the vehicle, one has an outstanding arrest warrant, while the other, a former navy sergeant, has not yet been charged.
Authorities seized the dismantled pickup truck parts as evidence, including various components such as exhaust parts, air conditioner parts, body panels, control parts, roof sections, toolboxes used for dismantling, car batteries, steering wheels, hood parts, front grilles, left and right fender panels, wheel arches, engine mounts, front frame, tailgate, rear bumper, lower frame, truck bed frame, and wheels.
