Drunk Driving Cases During 7-Day Songkran Period Rise to 5,806 but Decline from Previous Year

The Department of Probation revealed statistics 'Songkran drunk driving' totaling 5,806 cases over 7 days, preparing behavioral correction activities for offenders


On 17 April 2026, Police Lieutenant Colonel Piya Raksakul, Director-General of the Department of Probation, disclosed the results of intensified enforcement during the 2026 Songkran Festival, stating that on 16 April 2026, the final day of the measures, cases continued to enter the probation process, reflecting serious law enforcement to prevent and reduce road accidents.

Specifically, on 16 April 2026, a total of 948 cases entered the probation process: 861 cases (90.82%) involved driving under the influence of alcohol; 85 cases (8.96%) involved driving under the influence of drugs; 1 case (0.11%) was reckless driving; and 1 case (0.11%) was street racing.

For the cumulative total over the 7 days from 10 to 16 April 2026, there were 6,180 cases in total: 5,806 cases (93.95%) involved driving under the influence of alcohol; 366 cases (5.92%) involved driving under the influence of drugs; 5 cases (0.08%) involved reckless driving; and 3 cases (0.05%) involved street racing.

Compared to the 2025 Songkran Festival, which had 6,100 drunk driving cases, 2026 saw 5,806 cases, a decrease of 294 cases or 4.82%. The top three provinces with the highest drunk driving cases were Chiang Mai with 757 cases, Samut Prakan with 495 cases, and Bangkok with 351 cases.

The Director-General of the Department of Probation added that after the end of the intensified control period, probation officers nationwide will promptly review offenders' backgrounds thoroughly and strictly enforce legal measures, especially screening individuals with risky drinking behaviors to enter systematic rehabilitation processes, including appropriate treatment referrals.

Additionally, ongoing behavioral modification activities for offenders convicted of drunk driving are organized to raise awareness of the impact on life and society and to instill a sense of road safety responsibility.

Over the past 7 days, probation offices nationwide integrated cooperation with all partner networks to continuously conduct social activities, such as involving probationers in community service at 177 public service points with 2,574 participants; holding 18 road safety campaigns and public relations events with 1,643 participants; improving landscapes in high-accident areas 14 times with 855 participants; collecting 6,500 cc of blood from 147 donors; conducting 11 training sessions on traffic law and alcohol dangers with 774 participants; and supervising offenders' driving behavior via real-time CCTV observation with 72 participants. The Department of Probation emphasized continuing the "Control, Screen, Rehabilitate" measures to transform offenders into contributors to road safety and sustainably reintegrate good citizens into society.
