Nigerian Gunmen Raid Village, Kidnap Bride, Friends, and Infant Totaling 14

Gunmen in Nigeria attacked a village in the northeast, abducting a bride, her friends, and an infant. This occurred despite the government having previously declared a nationwide state of emergency.

Foreign news agencies reported that gunmen raided a village in northeastern Nigeria overnight into Sunday, 30 Nov 2025 GMT+7, abducting 13 women and one infant. This marks the latest kidnapping incident in this African nation.

Local villagers told AFP that the bride and 10 bridesmaids were among those abducted from Chacho village in Sokoto State on Sunday. In addition, one infant, the infant’s mother, and another woman were also taken.

In the northeastern region of Nigeria, there is a tradition where the bride spends her first wedding night with her bridesmaids at the new home, while the groom moves in later.

In recent weeks, so-called “bandit groups” have attacked various locations across Nigeria, kidnapping many people for ransom. The government has faced intense pressure to resolve the crisis, leading President Bola Tinubu to declare a nationwide state of emergency on 26 Nov 2025 GMT+7.

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump threatened military intervention in Nigeria to stop what he described as the killing of Christians by extremist Islamist groups.

Nigerian intelligence reports indicate a sharp increase in bandit kidnappings in Sokoto State during November, breaking the record for the most attacks in a single year. It is believed that neighboring states’ agreements to halt attacks in their areas contributed to the rise in Sokoto.

Security experts have long criticized such agreements, arguing they allow bandit gangs to establish strongholds in their hideouts while continuing attacks elsewhere.
