Frank Gehry, World Iconic Architect Behind Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, Dies at 96

Frank Gehry, the architect who revolutionized the field with avant-garde works like the Bilbao Guggenheim Museum, has died at 96, leaving behind an architectural legacy that shook the world.

On 5 Dec 2025 GMT+7, BBC reported that Frank Gehry, the Canadian-American architect and one of the most influential architects of the 20th and 21st centuries, passed away at age 96. Gehry's works remain celebrated as milestones in contemporary architecture and continue to inspire architects worldwide today.

Megan Lloyd, Gehry's chief of staff, revealed the news of his death. Gehry was known for his avant-garde, innovative, and highly experimental architectural style. His globally famous work is the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, located on the Nervión River in Bilbao, Basque Country, Spain. Opened in 1997, its titanium structure curves like a sculpture, turning Bilbao into a world-class art destination.

Earlier, Gehry's reputation began to rise when he renovated his own home in Santa Monica, California, using unexpected architectural materials such as wire mesh fences, plywood, and corrugated metal sheets, which became symbols of his bold experimental approach.
