
A 7.6-magnitude earthquake struck off the northeast coast of Japan, prompting authorities to issue tsunami warnings for several prefectures and detect a small tsunami wave.
The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 7.6-magnitude earthquake off Aomori Prefecture on Japan's northeast coast at approximately 23:15 local time on Monday, 8 Dec 2025 GMT+7. The epicenter was located 70 km from the coast at a depth of about 53 km.
The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) issued tsunami warnings for Aomori, Iwate, and Hokkaido prefectures, and provided tsunami advisories for Miyagi and Fukushima prefectures.
JMA stated that tsunami waves could reach nearly 10 feet (3 meters) in some coastal areas, including Iwate, Aomori, and parts of Hokkaido. Authorities confirmed a tsunami wave about 40 cm high was detected in Aomori Prefecture, with no reports of damage so far.
The CNN team in Tokyo reported feeling strong tremors lasting about 30 seconds before subsiding.
