Trump Signs Executive Order to Centralize AI Regulation, Aiming for Nationwide Standards

Donald Trump signed a new executive order on artificial intelligence aimed at pushing the U.S. to adopt a centralized national standard for AI regulatory laws after many states began enacting their own AI control measures.

U.S. President Donald Trump signed a new executive order on artificial intelligence (AI), stating that the U.S. should not allow AI regulations to vary by state, as this would create difficulties for tech companies and could hinder AI development approvals.

Trump told the media that he wants a single central approval body because it would be difficult to get approval if developers had to comply with 50 different state laws.

David Sachs, the White House AI advisor, said the order will increase federal power to oppose state AI laws considered excessively strict, but assured that the government will not oppose measures related to child safety or online harm prevention.

Meanwhile, tech giants including OpenAI, Alphabet's Google, Meta, and the Andreessen Horowitz fund have supported the idea of federal oversight of AI rather than fragmented state regulations. However, several states insist on retaining authority to regulate AI themselves since Congress has yet to pass comprehensive AI legislation.

State leaders from both Republican and Democratic parties agree that while the federal government should play a role, states need regulatory authority to protect citizens, especially as Congress has not yet passed tech control laws. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis proposed an AI Bill of Rights covering data privacy, parental controls, and consumer rights. California Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law requiring major AI companies to disclose risk mitigation measures for disasters or serious impacts. Other states have enacted laws banning AI-generated explicit images without consent and limiting political deepfakes.

This executive order represents Trump's latest effort to shape the direction of U.S. AI laws at the national level amid concerns that artificial intelligence technology is advancing faster than existing legal frameworks.
