Christie's auction house in the UK held a sale for the dinosaur skeleton "Spike," possibly the most complete ever found, achieving a price exceeding 3.9 million euros, or about 1.45 billion baht. Experts suggest it may be a new species.
On 11 Dec 2025 GMT+7, the renowned auction house Christie's in London, UK, auctioned "Spike," a dinosaur skeleton from the caenagnathid family, one of the most complete and rare skeletons ever discovered, closing at 3.46 million pounds, or about 3.9 million euros (1.45 billion baht).
James Hislop, Head of Science and Natural History at Christie's, said Spike's skeleton was discovered in 2022. Upon first seeing it, he immediately recognized it as a special piece—fresh, rare, and highly sought after by collectors.
Experts estimated a starting price between 3 and 5 million pounds but believed this might be too low, as wealthy collectors could bid the price higher in competition.
Spike's uniqueness lies in its distinctive pointed skull and the rarity of such completeness among fossils in the same family. Some related species have been described from only single bones, but Spike might represent a new species never before recorded in the fossil record.
