Time Magazine Honors Architects of AI as Person of the Year 2025

Time magazine officially named the group called the "Architects of AI" or "Architects of Artificial Intelligence" as Person of the Year 2025, noting that this is the year AI changed the world irreversibly.

Time stated that 2025 is the year when the potential of artificial intelligence, or AI, became clearly visible to the world and marks an irreversible turning point. The magazine said on social media that leading humanity into an era of machines capable of thinking has both amazed and concerned people, transforming the present and surpassing previous limits, making the Architects of AI Time's Person of the Year 2025.

Time explained that this decision focuses on people, not technology, emphasizing those who imagine, design, and build AI systems, even though the magazine has previously honored concepts or non-human entities.

Sam Jacobs, Time's editor-in-chief, wrote that over time, the magazine has not always chosen a single individual but sometimes groups, more women, and occasionally ideas, such as the endangered planet in 1988 or the personal computer in 1982.

He also cited the debates at the time about choosing the personal computer over Steve Jobs, Apple’s founder, which later became the subject of books and films.

Analysts see selecting AI as Person of the Year fitting for 2025. Thomas Hassan, senior analyst at research firm Forrester, noted that this year marks when AI shifted from being a new technology for early adopters to becoming a mainstream part of many consumers' daily lives.

Before the official announcement, AI was a top contender alongside technology leaders like Jensen Huang, CEO of Nvidia, and Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI. Religious leader Pope Leo XIII, the first American pope, also drew attention, as did political figures such as Donald Trump, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, and Sohraan Mamdani, the mayor-elect of New York City.

Donald Trump was previously named Time’s Person of the Year in 2024 after winning a second U.S. presidential term, following Taylor Swift, who held the title in 2023.

Time’s Person of the Year selection began in 1927, with editors choosing individuals or groups who had the greatest influence on world news and events over the past 12 months.
