Australia to Tighten Gun Control After Bondi Beach Shooting

Australia is preparing to tighten gun control laws after a mass shooting at Bondi Beach that has resulted in 15 deaths and dozens of injuries.

On Monday, 15 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Australian leaders agreed jointly to strengthen gun control laws following a mass shooting at a Jewish festival at Bondi Beach in Sydney on Sunday evening, which left 15 dead and 42 injured.

This is the worst mass shooting in Australia in nearly 30 years, with victims including a 10-year-old girl, a survivor of the Nazi genocide, and a rabbi (Jewish religious leader).

On Monday, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese convened a meeting with state and territory leaders to respond to the shooting and collectively agreed to tighten gun control laws nationwide.

The Prime Minister's Office stated that the leaders agreed to develop better methods for background checks of gun owners, prohibit non-citizens from obtaining gun licenses, and restrict the types of firearms legally permitted.

Australia's worst mass shooting occurred in 1996 in Port Arthur, a popular tourist site, where a lone gunman killed 35 innocent people. That massacre led to a major gun law reform, widely regarded as a "world-class standard."

Those measures included a gun buyback program, establishing a national firearms registry, and cracking down on semi-automatic weapons possession.

However, the latest shooting has raised questions about how a 50-year-old man and his 24-year-old son, who may be linked to the Islamic State (ISIS), obtained firearms.

The 50-year-old father shooter was shot dead by police at the scene, while the son remains critically injured and is receiving hospital treatment.
