Flash floods in Morocco have killed 37 people so far, while the Meteorology Department predicts more rain will fall on Tuesday.
Foreign news agencies report that flash floods struck the port city of Safi on Morocco's coast, resulting in at least 37 deaths and dozens of injuries requiring hospital treatment, with at least 70 homes in the old city center flooded.
Reports say many cars and heaps of garbage were swept across Safi after heavy rains on Sunday, causing some roads to close due to damage and debris.
Some residents of Safi described the day as dark and grim. One woman told AFP that she lost everything in the flood and even had to borrow clothes from neighbors.
Moroccan authorities stated that search and rescue efforts are ongoing, while the Meteorology Department forecasts heavy rain to continue on Tuesday, along with snow across the Atlas Mountains.
Experts say the climate crisis has contributed to Morocco's extreme weather fluctuations. Previously, the country faced a seven-year drought that depleted reservoir water levels.
