Manhunt Continues for Shooter in Brown University Attack After Suspect Released

U.S. authorities continue their manhunt for the gunman who carried out the shooting at Brown University after releasing a previously detained suspect due to insufficient evidence to hold him.

Foreign news agencies report that the search for the gunman responsible for the shooting at Brown University's Providence campus in Rhode Island, U.S., continued on Monday, 15 Dec 2025 GMT+7, following the decision by authorities to release a previously detained male suspect.

The shooting occurred last Saturday (13 Dec), when a man armed with a rifle stormed into a building where an exam was in progress and opened fire before fleeing. The attack resulted in 2 deaths and 9 injuries, including one person in critical condition. Seven others were stable but remained hospitalized, while one person was discharged.

Earlier, FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of a “person of interest” and said local police had provided leads to the federal investigation.

However, U.S. officials retracted this statement on Sunday evening (local time), citing insufficient evidence to link this individual to the shooting, and ultimately decided to release him.

Brett Smiley, mayor of Providence, said, “We know this will likely cause renewed anxiety in our community.” “It is shocking and very sad. I know students here, many of whom had to shelter in place for hours last night.” “They are all deeply shaken.”

Brown University officials announced that the final exams scheduled for Sunday have been postponed indefinitely.

Since the start of 2025, there have been over 300 mass shootings in the U.S. injuring four or more people. At the White House Christmas event on Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump briefly addressed the Brown University shooting, saying, “Things can happen,” and wished the injured a “speedy recovery.”
