Elderly Couple Attempts to Stop Gunman at Bondi Beach, Tragically Shot Dead

Dashcam footage reveals an elderly couple trying to stop the gunman responsible for the shooting at Bondi Beach, but tragically, both were shot and killed together.

On Tuesday, 16 Dec 2025 GMT+7, new video footage from the Bondi Beach shooting in Australia surfaced online. The dashcam footage shows an elderly couple confronting one of the gunmen before both were fatally shot.

Several Australian media outlets identified the elderly couple as Boris German, 69, and Sophia German, 61, Jewish Australians of Russian descent living in the Bondi area, with one son in his 30s.

Dashcam video from a passing car shows Boris fighting with the 50-year-old gunman, identified by police as Sajid Akram, as the attacker steps out of his vehicle holding a rifle. A flag resembling that of the Islamic State appears draped over the windshield.

An eyewitness reported that Boris tried to wrest the rifle from Akram as they both fell to the street. The elderly man briefly gained an advantage after grabbing the rifle, and then the couple confronted Akram before Boris collapsed beside the attacker’s vehicle.

“The elderly man on the street didn’t run away; instead, he charged toward danger, using all his strength to fight and wrestle the gun until he died,” Jenny, the dashcam owner who shared the video with Reuters, said.

“I saw on my camera that the elderly man was eventually shot and fell down. That moment broke my heart,” she added.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, which released wide-angle footage, Akram later got up and aimed his weapon at the couple, firing at least two shots. Drone footage then showed the couple lying dead together on the sidewalk.

“We are deeply saddened by the sudden and senseless loss of our beloved Boris and Sophia German,” the German family said in a statement on Tuesday afternoon local time. “Though nothing can lessen the pain of losing Boris and Sophia, we are immensely proud of their courage and selflessness.”

“This sums up who Boris and Sophia were — people who instinctively and selflessly tried to help others.”

Besides the German couple, another man, 62-year-old Reuven Morrison, also died trying to stop the attacker. His daughter, Shena Gatnik, told CBS News, “He jumped in as soon as the shooting started. He threw bricks, shouted at the shooter, and protected his community.”
