On 16 Dec 2025, U.S. prosecutors revealed that Nick Reiner, son of legendary Hollywood film director Rob Reiner and Michelle Singer Reiner, will face two special circumstances counts of first-degree murder after his parents were found dead at their Los Angeles home on Sunday (14 Dec).
Nathan Hochman, Los Angeles County District Attorney, announced the charges during a press conference Tuesday, emphasizing that 32-year-old Nick Reiner faces a maximum penalty of life imprisonment without the possibility of parole and potentially the death penalty.
The prosecutor stated that authorities believe this was a knife-related crime, and that cases involving family members are among the "most challenging and heartbreaking" his office has encountered.
Hochman also urged the public to obtain information about this case only from official sources, saying, "Please do not rely on speculation, rumors, or hearsay to assume you understand what happened in this case."
Following this, Jim McDonnell, Chief of the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), spoke at the press conference, announcing that charges have been filed against Nick Reiner and expressing condolences to all affected.
Officials have not disclosed how Nick Reiner was apprehended, stating they will withhold details that might "compromise the investigation" and declined to comment on possible drug use. Any evidence indicating mental illness will be presented to the court appropriately.
