Myanmar Military Government Denies Reports of Aung San Suu Kyis Death, Affirms She Is Alive but Lacks Proof

The Myanmar military government denies rumors that "Aung San Suu Kyi" may have died, affirming she remains in good health amid skepticism from human rights advocates and opposition, noting she has been isolated from the outside world for over two years with no evidence to prove otherwise.

On 17 Dec 2025 GMT+7, the Myanmar military government issued a statement rejecting rumors that Aung San Suu Kyi, former civilian leader and Nobel Peace Prize laureate, might have died while in custody, asserting she is still alive and in good health. However, the statement did not provide any evidence or data to support this claim.

The military government's statement followed concerns expressed by Kim Aris, Suu Kyi’s son, who fears his mother may have died because the family has had no contact with her for over two years. He noted that Suu Kyi suffers from multiple chronic health issues, including heart, bone, and gum problems, and has never been allowed to communicate with her legal team or family. He emphasized that without anyone seeing her in person, it is impossible to confirm that she is alive.

Human rights organizations and opponents of the military government questioned that if Suu Kyi is truly in good health, the government should permit her family or trusted individuals, such as United Nations human rights officials, to visit her to alleviate public concern.

Meanwhile, U Tun Myat, a leader of the National League for Democracy (NLD), said that since 2022 there has been no verifiable evidence regarding Suu Kyi's place of detention or condition. He accused the military government of merely spreading propaganda, allowing rumors to circulate, and urged them to publicly clarify the truth.

To date, the most recent public image of Suu Kyi is CCTV footage from 22 Aug 2022 GMT+7, showing her being taken to court. The last confirmed meeting was with Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister in July 2023, lasting about 90 minutes.

Aung San Suu Kyi has been detained since the 1 Feb 2021 GMT+7 coup and was sentenced to 33 years in prison on 19 charges, which the international community regards as politically motivated. Since then, she has been held without any contact with the outside world.
