A small plane crashed in North Carolina, causing multiple fatalities. A U.S. congressman confirmed that former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle and his family were among those killed.
Foreign news agencies reported that a small Cessna C550 plane carrying six passengers crashed while attempting to land at Statesville Regional Airport in North Carolina around 10:20 a.m. local time on Thursday, 18 Dec 2025 GMT+7.
Darren Campbell, sheriff of Iredell County, confirmed to the Associated Press that there were fatalities in the incident but declined to specify the exact number. However, CNN cited sources saying all six people onboard—one pilot and five passengers—were killed.
WBTV television station reported that the plane’s registration records show it is owned by a private company linked to Greg Biffle, the retired NASCAR driver.
Richard Hudson, a member of the U.S. House of Representatives, confirmed that Greg Biffle, his wife, and their two children died in the crash.
Reports state the small plane took off from the runway around 10:06 a.m. local time and remained airborne briefly before attempting to land and crashing near the eastern end of the runway. Authorities have not yet provided information on the cause of the crash.
John Ferguson, director of Statesville Airport, told reporters that the airport will remain closed until further notice as crews work to clear debris from the runway.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB), leading the investigation, said it is sending a team to probe the serious accident, expected to arrive at the scene by Thursday night U.S. time.
