Police Identify Suspect in Brown University Shooting, Investigate Possible Link to MIT Professors Murder

U.S. police have identified the suspect in the shocking Brown University shooting last weekend and are moving forward with an investigation into whether the suspect is linked to the murder of an MIT professor two days later.

Sources close to the investigation revealed that authorities have identified the suspect in the Brown University shooting but have not released further details. They are actively investigating the possibility that the suspect may also be connected to the murder of a Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor that occurred two days later.

The shooting took place on 13 December inside a building at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, resulting in two students killed and at least eight injured, plunging the state capital into fear and triggering a large-scale manhunt.

Just two days after the shooting, on the evening of Monday, 15 December, 47-year-old Professor Nuno Loureiro, a faculty member in nuclear physics and the Plasma and Fusion Research Center at MIT, was shot and killed inside his home in Brookline, Massachusetts.

Brookline is about 79 kilometers from Brown University, raising questions about a possible connection between the two cases, although the FBI previously stated it had found no clear evidence linking the incidents.

Providence police said the Brown University shooting suspect fled on foot into a nearby residential neighborhood, so tracking the suspect relies heavily on surveillance footage from private homes, since the academic buildings and surrounding areas have few security cameras.

Authorities released images and videos of a masked man believed to be the shooter, based on eyewitness accounts. The footage shows the man walking near the university before and after the shooting, including during the arrival of police vehicles with flashing emergency lights.

Providence Mayor Brett Smiley said that residents and students have begun to feel anxious and pressured as the search for the suspect has dragged on for several days without any arrests.

Police also released an image of another man seen near the crime scene, identifying him as a key witness who may have useful information for the investigation.

Earlier, authorities announced that a suspect had been detained but later released after determining that individual was not involved in the shooting.
