Myanmar Soldiers Arrest 24-Year-Old Mandalay Activist Leading Anti-Election Protests

Myanmar soldiers arrested "Tet Myat Aung," a 24-year-old protest leader active in Mandalay, after he led an anti-election protest ahead of the December 28 vote.

On 19 December 2025, foreign news agencies reported that Tet Myat Aung, a prominent 24-year-old activist from Mandalay, was detained by the Myanmar military and held without contact with the outside world, raising serious concerns about his safety and well-being.

Tet Myat Aung, former president of the Yadanabon University Student Union, was arrested on 14 December after a warrant was issued and a bounty placed on him due to his opposition activities against the military government. Opposition networks warned of an urgent and serious threat to his life.

Earlier, on 3 December, he was among several well-known activist leaders who organized protests in Mandalay calling for the release of political prisoners, a boycott of the election, and an end to forced military conscription. On the same day, the military government charged him and nine other protesters under Section 24 of the Election Protection Law, a new law criticized for suppressing the public and carrying prison terms of 5 to 10 years.

Since the Election Protection Law took effect in July, at least 318 people have been arrested, including many from the entertainment and film industries, reflecting an intensifying crackdown amid the military government's efforts to conduct elections despite widespread public opposition.
