Indian Train Collides with Wild Elephant Herd, 7 Elephants Killed

A train in India collided with a herd of wild elephants in the early hours of Saturday, killing seven elephants and injuring one, while the train derailed.

Foreign news agencies reported that a train traveling to New Delhi struck a herd of wild elephants in northeastern India early Saturday morning (20 Dec 2025 GMT+7), resulting in seven elephant deaths and one injury.

Northeast Frontier Railway stated in a release that the incident occurred at 02:17 local time on Saturday in Hojai district, Assam. The location was not designated as an elephant crossing. The train driver attempted emergency braking upon spotting the herd but was unable to stop in time.

Northeast Frontier Railway added that the collision caused the locomotive and five passenger carriages to derail, but no passengers or staff were injured.

“Trains scheduled to pass this route will be temporarily rerouted. Authorities are currently working on recovery and track repairs,” the railway said.
