Anwar Ibrahim urged Thailand and Cambodia to seek a peaceful resolution to their conflict at the ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting this Monday.
On Sunday, 21 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim posted that Thailand and Cambodia must uphold the spirit of dialogue, wisdom, and mutual respect to ease tensions and maintain regional security and peace.
Anwar's remarks came ahead of the ASEAN member states' foreign ministers convening an extraordinary meeting on Monday, 22 Dec 2025 GMT+7, to find solutions to the ongoing dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
Anwar posted on his official Facebook page that he had emphasized this point to both Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet and Thai Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul during discussions on the best approaches to manage the border dispute.
He added that Monday's meeting would provide an opportunity for both sides to directly negotiate and peacefully resolve the conflict. "Tomorrow's ASEAN Foreign Ministers' Meeting will serve as an appropriate and constructive forum for both countries to open dialogue, resolve the dispute peacefully, and jointly seek a fair and sustainable solution," he said.
The extraordinary meeting on Monday, chaired by Malaysian Foreign Minister Mohamad Hassan, will follow up on a prior agreement that Anwar had reached with the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia on 11 Dec.
"This meeting will provide a platform for ASEAN foreign ministers to exchange views on the current situation between Cambodia and Thailand," stated a Sunday release from the Malaysian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
The statement further explained that the special meeting will "consider possible steps" that ASEAN members "may take to support ongoing efforts to reduce violence and end hostilities for the benefit of peace and security in the broader region."
"Malaysia remains firmly committed to promoting constructive dialogue in line with ASEAN's principles," the statement added.
"In that regard, Malaysia will support both parties in adhering to international law, maintaining good neighborly relations, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation at bilateral and multilateral levels, aiming toward a peaceful, just, and sustainable resolution to the dispute."
