China Affirms Support for ASEAN, Urges Thailand and Cambodia to End Fighting, Prioritizing Peoples Interests

China's Foreign Ministry spokesperson reaffirmed support for ASEAN's efforts to call on Thailand and Cambodia to stop fighting, highlighting the need to consider the interests of the people in both countries.

At the Foreign Ministry's regular press briefing on 22 Dec 2025 GMT+7, a reporter asked about the special ASEAN foreign ministers' meeting held today in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, which focuses on the current Thailand-Cambodia border situation. Since Thailand and Cambodia have yet to reach a ceasefire agreement, what is China's view on this matter? Can China provide information on the mediation efforts of Deng Xijun, the Special Envoy for Asian Affairs from the Foreign Ministry, in Thailand and Cambodia?

Gao Jiakun, spokesperson for China's Foreign Ministry, stated, “Both Thailand and Cambodia are key ASEAN members. China appreciates and supports ASEAN's efforts, especially Malaysia's, in urging both sides to cease hostilities and restore peace, taking into account the fundamental interests of maintaining peace and stability along the border and for the benefit of the people in both countries.”

“Since the conflict between Thailand and Cambodia escalated again, China has actively acted as a mediator and promoted reconciliation in its own way. Foreign Minister Wang Yi has held discussions with the foreign ministers of Thailand and Cambodia, and officials from the Foreign Ministry have been in continuous communication with Thailand, Cambodia, and relevant ASEAN member states.”

“Deng Xijun, the Special Envoy for Asian Affairs, is traveling back and forth between Thailand and Cambodia to mediate. We will release information about Deng Xijun's mediation efforts at an appropriate time. China will continue to promote peace talks and play a constructive role in easing tensions.”
