An Indonesian passenger bus crashed into a highway barrier, causing the vehicle to overturn, resulting in at least 16 deaths and dozens of injuries.

On Monday, 22 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Indonesian rescue officials reported that a passenger bus collided with a barrier on a highway while traveling from Jakarta to Yogyakarta in the early morning, causing the bus to overturn and killing at least 16 people.

Budiono, head of the local search and rescue office, stated in a press release that the bus was traveling at a “relatively high” speed when it reached a curve at the highway interchange, causing it to crash into the barrier and overturn.

“We have evacuated and rescued 34 victims,” Budiono said, adding that 15 people were declared dead at the scene, one died at the hospital, and several injured were sent for treatment in Semarang.

Indonesia frequently faces road accidents due to vehicles often being old and poorly maintained, combined with widespread traffic rule violations. In 2024, a crash involving cars and a bus on a congested highway during the Eid al-Fitr festival resulted in at least 12 deaths.

Earlier, in 2019, a bus plunged into a ravine on the western part of Sumatra Island, killing at least 35 people.
