Former Japanese Emperor Akihito has turned 92 years old. The Imperial Household Agency announced that his heart condition remains stable.
On 23 December 2025, the Japanese Imperial Household Agency announced that former Emperor Akihito reached the age of 92 on Tuesday, 23 December, amid well-wishes from the Imperial family and the public.
The statement said that former Emperor Akihito, who has heart-related health issues, was hospitalized in Tokyo for five-day treatments in May and July after doctors diagnosed him with asymptomatic myocardial ischemia and supraventricular arrhythmia. He is currently receiving medication and his overall condition is relatively stable.
At present, former Emperor Akihito continues his long-standing academic interest by conducting research on flatfish. He works in laboratories within the palace and other locations.
A birthday celebration will be held at the palace residence on the same day. Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako, Crown Prince Akishino, and other members of the Imperial family will attend the event.
