Vince Zampella, co-creator of the renowned game “Call of Duty,” died in a car accident at age 55, along with another passenger who was traveling with him.
Foreign news agencies reported on 23 Dec 2025 that Vince Zampella, co-creator of the famous game “Call of Duty,” passed away following a car accident in California at the age of 55.
Electronic Arts (EA), the parent company of Respawn Entertainment—the game studio Zampella co-founded—confirmed the death of this influential game developer.
Reports state that Zampella was traveling in a Ferrari with one other passenger when the car crashed and caught fire on a highway in Los Angeles last Sunday (21 Dec).
“This is a loss beyond imagination. We extend our condolences to Vince’s family, his loved ones, and everyone who admired his work,” an EA spokesperson told the BBC.
Officials said the passenger in the front seat was ejected from the vehicle, while the driver remained trapped inside. It is not yet clear whether Zampella was driving or who the other individual in the car was, but both died.
“For reasons still unknown, the vehicle lost control, veered off the road, crashed into a concrete barrier, and caught fire, engulfing the entire car,” stated the California Highway Patrol in a release.
Zampella co-created the first “Call of Duty” game in 2003 with Jason West and Grant Collier, longtime collaborators.
The game, partly inspired by World War II events, has sold over 500 million copies, making Activision, now part of Microsoft, one of the most profitable game companies. The franchise is also being adapted into a live-action film set to premiere soon.
His success extended beyond “Call of Duty,” as he was also behind other popular games such as Medal of Honor, Titanfall, and Apex Legends.
