The Louvre Museum is quickly addressing security vulnerabilities by installing metal window grills at the site where thieves broke in and stole royal jewels valued at $100 million without leaving any trace.
The Louvre Museum, a world-renowned landmark in central Paris, has begun reinforcing security measures following a notorious jewel theft that shocked the global museum community. The criminals stole royal insignia and priceless diamonds worth over $102 million, but the stolen items have yet to be recovered.
On Tuesday, when the Louvre was closed to visitors, maintenance staff wearing helmets and reflective vests used a freight elevator to reach the second-floor balcony and installed metal grills on the windows of the Apollo Gallery. This was the entry point used by the thieves during the October incident.
The incident footage reflects the alarming theft on 19 October, when the criminals disguised themselves as workers and used the same type of freight elevator to reach the balcony. They then cut the window glass and entered the jewel exhibition room.
Reports state the thieves took only 8 minutes to grab numerous valuable items, including a tiara, emerald earrings, a sapphire necklace, and other historic jewelry, before fleeing without a trace. This has raised questions about the security measures at the world’s most visited museum.
Although French authorities have arrested four suspects and filed charges, the stolen jewels remain missing, and investigations are ongoing.
The Louvre Museum has not yet issued an official statement regarding the window grill installation or the security system upgrades.
