6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Taiwan with No Severe Damage Reported

A 6.1 magnitude earthquake occurred southeast of Taiwan, causing buildings to shake, but no severe damage or injuries have been reported.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau reported that a 6.1 magnitude earthquake struck the southeast of Taiwan Island on the evening of Wednesday, 24 Dec 2025 GMT+7. The tremors caused buildings in Taipei to shake, but so far there are no reports of serious damage to life or property.

The earthquake occurred at 17:47 local time at a depth of 11.9 kilometers. The United States Geological Survey (USGS) assessed the magnitude at 6.0.

The National Fire Agency stated that, to date, there have been no reports of damage to the island's transportation infrastructure. Meanwhile, TSMC, Taiwan's major chip manufacturer, announced that the tremors have not reached a level that requires evacuating employees from factories.

Taiwan's Central Weather Bureau indicated that warnings were issued for several areas, including Taipei, Kaohsiung, Taichung, and Tainan. The earthquake intensity was measured at level 4 (out of 7 on Taiwan's scale) in Hualien and Pingtung counties.

Taiwan is located near the junction of two tectonic plates, making it prone to earthquakes. For example, in 2016, a quake in southern Taiwan caused over 100 deaths, and in 1999, a 7.3 magnitude earthquake killed over 2,000 people.
