Cambodian Embassies Warn Citizens to Avoid Traveling Through Thailand Citing Numerous Issues

Cambodian embassies in several countries have advised their citizens and tourists to avoid traveling to Cambodia through Thai airports or Thai airlines, citing numerous unfair problems encountered.

On Thursday, 25 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Cambodian embassies in countries such as Australia, the United Kingdom, and Japan issued official statements via their Facebook pages warning citizens and tourists to avoid transiting through Thai airports or using Thai airlines to enter Cambodia, citing excessive difficulties faced.

The announcement from the Cambodian embassy in Australia stated, “There have been reports of difficulties faced by travelers to the Kingdom of Cambodia during transit in Thailand, especially some European travelers who were subjected to excessively harsh and unreasonable inspection measures when transiting in Thailand.”

These measures include prolonged questioning and procedures before boarding, unfair demands for proof of sufficient financial resources, and overly strict verification of accommodation bookings in Cambodia.

The announcement further stated, “In more severe cases, these measures have been accompanied by problems related to baggage inspections and mishandling, resulting in checked luggage being lost upon arrival in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.” As a precaution, travelers are strongly advised to choose alternative routes to travel to Cambodia.

Meanwhile, the statements from the Cambodian embassies in the UK and Japan conveyed similar content. The UK embassy emphasized, “To avoid these issues, travelers are advised to consider temporarily avoiding transiting through Thailand and using Thai airlines when traveling to Cambodia.”

“Please note there are many other airlines and flight routes that continue to provide quality service and smooth transit without discrimination, showing proper respect to travelers,” and “The Kingdom of Cambodia remains a safe and welcoming destination for all.”
