Medical Helicopter Crashes on Mount Kilimanjaro, Killing 5

A helicopter crashed on the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania during a medical mission, resulting in five deaths, including foreign nationals.

Tanzania's Civil Aviation Authority announced on Thursday, 25 Dec 2025 GMT+7, that a helicopter crashed near Mount Kilimanjaro, causing five fatalities. Local media reported that the aircraft was conducting a medical rescue operation.

Tanzania National Parks Authority stated in a release that the deceased included a Tanzanian guide and doctor, a Zimbabwean pilot, and two tourists from the Czech Republic.

The Civil Aviation Authority added that the helicopter crashed near Barafu Camp on the mountain on Wednesday, but the cause of the crash has not yet been disclosed.

Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest peak in Africa, nearly 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) above sea level. Approximately 50,000 tourists climb Kilimanjaro annually.

Local newspaper Mwananchi reported that the helicopter crashed at an altitude between 4,670 and 4,700 meters.
