Turkey Arrests 115 Suspected ISIS Members Plotting New Years Attacks

Turkish police raided hundreds of locations across Istanbul and arrested 115 suspects linked to the Islamic State militant group, also seizing a number of weapons and ammunition.

On Thursday, 25 Dec 2025 GMT+7, Turkish authorities announced they successfully prevented planned attacks during the Christmas and New Year festivities after detaining more than 100 suspected members of the Islamic State (ISIS).

The Istanbul chief prosecutor stated that police searched 124 targets citywide, arresting 115 suspects and confiscating firearms, ammunition, and numerous documents related to the organization. Additionally, officials are working to apprehend 22 remaining suspects.

Turkish officials said ISIS supporters planned ongoing attacks across Turkey this week, particularly targeting non-Muslims, while the prosecutor's office noted suspects maintained contact with ISIS operatives outside Turkey.

This announcement came just two days after Turkish intelligence raided ISIS groups near the Afghanistan-Pakistan border, detaining a Turkish national accused of being a senior ISIS network member operating in the region and charged with plotting civilian attacks.

Turkey’s security agencies continue operations against ISIS affiliates, with Turkey sharing a 900-kilometer border with Syria, where ISIS remains active.

Syrian President Ahmed al-Shara, closely allied with the Turkish government, has pledged cooperation with the US and Europe to eradicate remaining ISIS elements.

Last week, the US launched a major airstrike campaign against ISIS strongholds in Syria in retaliation for the killing of three Americans—two soldiers and one civilian interpreter—ambushed earlier in December in Palmyra.
