Magnitude 6.6 Earthquake Shakes Taiwan Taipei Trembles, TSMC Evacuates Factories

A magnitude 6.6 earthquake struck off Taiwan’s coast, causing tremors throughout the island including Taipei, while major chipmaker TSMC evacuated some factories as a safety measure.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported a 6.6 magnitude earthquake off Taiwan’s northeast coast at 23:05 local time on Saturday, 27 Dec 2025 GMT+7. The epicenter was about 32 kilometers from the coastal city of Yilan.

Taiwan’s Central Weather Bureau measured the earthquake at magnitude 7.0. The tremors were felt across the island, including the capital Taipei, where buildings shook from the impact.

The earthquake’s epicenter was 70 kilometers underground. There have been no widespread reports of damage or casualties, and no tsunami warning has been issued.

However, local media reported some ceiling panels collapsed and supermarket shelves were toppled. Train operators temporarily reduced speeds on some regular and high-speed rail lines as a safety precaution.

The tremors also prompted TSMC, the world’s largest chipmaker, to evacuate personnel from some factories for safety, although the company confirmed all factory safety systems remained fully operational.

Taiwanese President Lai Ching-te posted on social media urging citizens to remain vigilant and prepared for possible aftershocks following the quake.
