Russian forces launched numerous drones and missiles to attack Ukraine's Kyiv region, resulting in multiple injuries and deaths, while the Ukrainian leader was traveling to the United States to meet with Donald Trump.
Foreign news agencies reported that Russia heavily bombarded Kyiv, Ukraine's capital, with drones and missiles on Saturday (27 Dec 2025), as President Volodymyr Zelensky was traveling to the United States to meet President Donald Trump to discuss a peace plan.
Ukrainian authorities stated that the intense drone and missile barrage lasting nearly 10 hours caused 2 deaths, dozens of injuries, and left over 600,000 residents in the Kyiv region without electricity and heating amid freezing subzero temperatures.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko revealed that about 2,600 residential buildings were hit, along with over 300 other facilities including schools, daycare centers, and social service buildings.
Zelensky said that Russia launched around 500 drones and 40 missiles at the capital and surrounding areas, showing that Russia does not want to end the invasion that began in February 2022 and has caused tens of thousands of deaths.
“Russian representatives participated in prolonged talks, but in reality, it was Kinzhal missiles and Shahed drones that spoke for them,” Zelensky said, adding, “They do not want to end the war and try to use every opportunity to inflict more suffering on Ukraine and increase pressure on others worldwide.”
Before the talks between Zelensky and Trump scheduled to begin Sunday (28 Dec) in Florida, Russian officials claimed that Kyiv and its supporters in the European Union are attempting to “undermine” a ceasefire plan previously mediated by the United States.
The Russian military said it used hypersonic missiles and drones to strike infrastructure and energy facilities “used for the benefit of the Ukrainian military,” as well as various military areas.
Meanwhile, the meeting between Zelensky and Trump in Florida on Sunday aims to discuss a new peace proposal, as Trump intensifies efforts to end the most severe European conflict since World War II.
The new plan, consisting of 20 points, would freeze the war at the current front lines but might require Ukraine to withdraw troops from eastern areas, including the Donbas region, and could establish a buffer zone there, according to details Zelensky revealed this week.
This new proposal is Ukraine’s clearest acceptance yet of the possibility of territorial concessions, a marked departure from the 28-point plan Washington proposed in November, which largely aligned with Russia’s main demands.
However, Trump told Politico on Friday about Zelensky’s plan, “He (Zelensky) doesn’t have a plan until I approve it,” adding, “We will see what he has to offer.”
