Controversial Cruise Ship Causes Trouble Again After Leaving Passenger to Die on Island

The cruise ship Coral Adventurer, which once left an elderly passenger behind on an island resulting in her death, has caused trouble again by running aground off the coast of Papua New Guinea.

Foreign news agencies reported on 28 Dec 2025 that the cruise ship Coral Adventurer ran aground on the coast of Papua New Guinea during its first voyage since the death of an elderly passenger in late October.

Coral Adventurer is under investigation over the death of 80-year-old Susan Reece, who was left behind by this cruise ship on remote Lizard Island in Australia, leading to her death.

A ship spokesperson said that on Saturday (27 Dec) the vessel experienced a "grounding accident" off the eastern coast of Papua New Guinea, about 30 kilometers from the city of Lae, but all passengers and crew onboard are safe, and initial inspections found no damage to the hull.

A spokesperson for the Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) told the BBC that the agency had received no distress signals from Coral Adventurer.

The statement added that AMSA is monitoring the situation and is ready to assist Papua New Guinea authorities if necessary. No decisions have been made yet regarding the current 12-day voyage, which is scheduled to conclude on 30 December.

Previously, on 26 Oct, Susan Reece went hiking on Lizard Island with other passengers but separated from the group to rest. Coral Adventurer departed without her and returned several hours later after the crew realized a passenger was missing.

A large search operation found her body the following day.

At the time of Ms. Reece’s death, the ship was only two days into a planned 60-day voyage. The remaining cruise was canceled, and all passengers received full refunds.
