Anthony Joshua, Former World Heavyweight Boxing Champion, Injured in Nigerian Car Crash That Killed Two

Anthony Joshua, former world heavyweight boxing champion, was involved in a car accident in Nigeria that caused two fatalities, while Joshua himself was injured.

Foreign news agencies reported that Anthony Joshua, a British boxer of Nigerian descent and former world heavyweight champion, was involved in a car accident in Nigeria on Monday (29 Dec 2025), resulting in minor injuries to him and two deaths.

The car Joshua was riding in collided with another vehicle around 11:00 a.m. local time on Monday, on the Lagos–Ibadan highway in the town of Makun, located north of Lagos, Nigeria's economic capital.

A police statement said Joshua was seated in the back seat of the car, which caused him to suffer minor injuries; he is currently under medical care. Meanwhile, two people in the same vehicle as Joshua died.

Adeniyi Orojoh, a witness, told Punch news agency that Joshua was traveling with a convoy of two vehicles, and the passengers sitting beside the driver and beside Joshua died at the scene.

Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter, told Daily Mail Sport that the 36-year-old boxer had traveled to Nigeria to relax with his family.

“We are trying to contact Anthony, and meanwhile, we do not want to speculate about his condition. But from the pictures I have seen, it is reassuring that he does not appear to be seriously hurt,” Hearn said.

Nigeria's Federal Road Safety Corps stated in a release that the Lexus vehicle Joshua was in is "suspected of exceeding the legal speed limit," losing control while attempting to overtake, and crashing into a stationary truck parked by the roadside.

The identities of the deceased have not yet been disclosed, but a spokesperson for the Ogun State governor indicated that preliminary reports suggest the victims were two foreign men.

This accident occurred just weeks after Joshua knocked out Jake Paul, a famous YouTuber turned boxer, in a Netflix-supported fight in Miami.

Since then, Joshua, a former Olympic champion, has been linked to a potential bout with Tyson Fury, a fellow British boxer and former world champion.

Joshua's last fight before facing Paul was a fifth-round knockout loss to fellow British boxer Daniel Dubois in September last year.
