Myanmar Military-Backed Party Claims Overwhelming 80% Victory in First Phase of Election Amid Fraud Allegations

The Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), representing Myanmar's military, claims to have won over 80% of seats in the first phase of elections across 102 constituencies. Analysts note the use of advance ballots and orchestrated tactics to secure results, aiming to legitimize the military dictatorship.

On 30 December 2025 GMT+7, the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), the military’s proxy party in Myanmar, claimed a landslide victory in the first phase of elections organized by the military junta, stating it had won at least 80% of the contested constituencies.

A USDP spokesperson told the media that preliminary results show the party winning decisively. However, the Union Election Commission has yet to officially announce the results.

The first phase of voting occurred on 28 December in 102 constituencies amid questions about legitimacy, as the country's most popular party, the National League for Democracy (NLD), did not participate. This followed the detention of party leaders, including Nobel Peace Prize laureate Aung San Suu Kyi and former President U Win Myint, who remain imprisoned.

Analysts say the USDP’s victory was predictable, pointing out that advance ballots were used to secure a win from the outset. They add that once the entire election process concludes, the military will stage a comprehensive victory for the USDP.

The military government plans to hold the next election phases on 11 January in another 100 constituencies and on 25 January in 63 more. Meanwhile, 65 constituencies will see no elections because they lie outside the military’s control.
