Anthony Joshua, the English boxer and former heavyweight world champion, has been cleared to leave the hospital after a car accident in Nigeria that killed two of his close friends.
Foreign news agencies reported on 1 Jan 2026 that Anthony Joshua, the famous English boxer and former heavyweight world champion, was allowed to leave a Nigerian hospital just days after a serious car accident that claimed the lives of two of his close friends.
A joint statement from Ogun and Lagos states confirmed that doctors deemed the former world champion physically fit to continue recovery at home. However, Joshua remains deeply grieving the loss of his friends in this incident.
On the day of the accident, Monday 29 Dec 2025, Joshua was a passenger in a Lexus SUV that collided with a stationary truck on a main highway in Ogun State near Lagos.
The crash caused minor injuries to Joshua, but his two friends, Sina Khamie and Latif "Latz" Ayodele, died at the scene.
The joint statement added that after leaving the hospital on Wednesday, the English boxer attended the funeral home where arrangements were underway to repatriate the bodies of his two friends.
Earlier, Eddie Hearn, Joshua's promoter since the start of his professional career after winning Olympic gold in 2012, posted a tribute to the two friends who were also part of Joshua's team.
"Rest in peace, Latz and Sina," Hearn wrote on Instagram. "Your strength and integrity, along with many other great qualities, will be deeply missed by everyone. Sending prayers to the families, friends, and of course AJ (Anthony Joshua) to stay strong in this difficult time."
Sina Khamie was Joshua’s full-time sports science and physical rehabilitation coach, working with him for over a decade.
The law enforcement and traffic investigation agency (TRACE) in Ogun State, where the accident occurred, reported that preliminary investigations found the vehicle Joshua was in suffered a tire blowout before crashing into the truck.
