6.5 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Mexico, Prompting Urgent Evacuations from High-Rise Buildings No Major Damage Reported

A magnitude 6.5 earthquake shook Mexico City and Guerrero state. Warning alarms sounded across the city, prompting the president to evacuate the presidential palace during a press conference. No fatalities or serious damage have been reported.

On 2 January 2025, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) reported a magnitude 6.5 earthquake shaking Mexico City and Guerrero state in the southwest of the country on the morning of Friday, 2 January 2026 local time. The quake caused panic as many residents rushed out of buildings onto the streets after earthquake warning signals sounded citywide.

Reports from the Mexican Seismological Agency indicated the epicenter was about 14 kilometers southwest of San Marcos city in Guerrero state, approximately 400 kilometers from Mexico City. The USGS noted the tremor occurred near the Pacific Ocean coast east of the famous tourist city Acapulco at a depth of around 35 kilometers.

The tremors caused President Claudia Shinebom to halt her first morning press briefing of the year and evacuate the presidential palace with reporters after the warning alarms sounded suddenly. However, the president stated that no serious damage or injuries have been reported in either Mexico City or Guerrero state.

Local media reported intermittent power outages in parts of Mexico City and police helicopters were dispatched to patrol the downtown area. The shaking was also felt across several regions including Tlaxcala, Veracruz, Salapa, Orizaba, and Coatzacoalcos.

Mexico sits at the convergence of five tectonic plates, making it one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world. Mexico City, built on an ancient lakebed of clay, is particularly vulnerable to seismic shaking.
