Trump Warns U.S. Ready to Intervene if Iran Kills Protesters, Faces Warning Not to Cross the Line

Donald Trump warned the Iranian government not to use violence against protesters, saying if they continue shooting citizens, the U.S. is "ready to assist immediately." An advisor to Iran's Supreme Leader responded, warning that intervention could shake the entire Middle East.

On 2 Jan 2025 GMT+7, tensions escalated in Iran amid ongoing protests after U.S. President Donald Trump openly warned the Iranian government that if they continue using violence and killing protesters, the U.S. will not remain idle and is ready to provide immediate assistance.

Trump posted a brief message on social media stating that if Iran shoots and kills peaceful protesters, something they reportedly do regularly, the U.S. will intervene. He ended with a firm statement that the U.S. is fully prepared and ready to act, though he did not specify what form the action would take.

This statement came amid large protests across multiple Iranian cities that have lasted nearly a week, driven by worsening economic problems, a sharply devalued rial, and dissatisfaction with the religious government. At least eight deaths have been reported.

Iran responded swiftly. Ali Larijani, advisor to Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Leader, warned Trump to be cautious with his words, stating that intervention in Iran’s internal affairs would lead to instability across the Middle East and would ultimately harm U.S. interests.

Iranian media reported that this latest wave of protests is the most intense since the 2022 uprising, with at least eight deaths from clashes in various areas including Lordegan, Azna, Kuhdasht, Fouladshahr, and Marvdasht. In some cases, it remains unclear whether the deceased were protesters or security personnel. Social media images show cars being burned and confrontations between protesters and security forces.
