Angelina Jolie Visits Rafah Border on Egyptian Side to Monitor Gaza Aid Mission

Angelina Jolie, a famous Hollywood actress, traveled to the Rafah border crossing on the Egyptian side, the gateway into the Gaza Strip, to meet with officials and volunteers amid the ongoing conflict crisis.

AFP reporters reported that Angelina Jolie, a globally renowned actress, visited the Rafah border crossing from the Egyptian side. She spoke with officials from the Egyptian Red Crescent and truck drivers responsible for transporting humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. Jolie traveled with a US delegation and was welcomed by both current and former Egyptian officials.

Jolie said she felt deeply honored to meet the local aid volunteers. One Red Crescent volunteer told the Oscar-winning actress that thousands of aid trucks remain parked at the border crossing, unable to enter Gaza.

Local media reported that Jolie’s visit, as a former special envoy of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR), aims to monitor the conditions of injured Palestinians receiving treatment in Egypt and to inspect the delivery process of humanitarian aid into Gaza, which has suffered severe damage from the war.

However, so far neither Jolie nor Egyptian authorities have issued an official statement regarding the visit.

The Rafah border crossing was expected to reopen under a ceasefire agreement in Gaza effective since October, but in practice, the crossing remains closed.

Meanwhile, Egypt and six other countries, including Saudi Arabia, have jointly called on the international community to pressure Israel, as the occupying power, to immediately lift restrictions on importing and distributing essential goods into Gaza.

Earlier in December, Israel announced it would open the Rafah crossing only for those wishing to leave Gaza. This prompted the Egyptian government to quickly deny giving approval for such measures as claimed.

Angelina Jolie is recognized as a global public figure with a long-standing humanitarian role. She resigned as a UNHCR special envoy at the end of 2022 after over 20 years working with the United Nations to focus more broadly on humanitarian issues.
