President Donald Trump of the United States revealed via Truth Social that U.S. forces have captured Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in a major operation, which has sharply escalated tensions in Venezuela.
Meanwhile, the Venezuelan government quickly issued a statement in response, with the defense minister announcing a nationwide military mobilization and stating that the country is facing the worst invasion in its history.
Vladimir Padrino López, Venezuela's defense minister, spoke in Spanish via video, ordering all military branches to mobilize immediately nationwide, emphasizing that all actions are under President Maduro's orders.
He called on Venezuelans to unite in resistance, saying Venezuela is enduring the worst invasion it has ever faced and affirmed that despite the attack, they will never surrender.
However, Delcy Rodríguez, Venezuela's vice president, stated that the government does not know the whereabouts of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife. She described the lack of contact with the country's leader and first lady as extremely serious and declared that the government will not accept violations of national sovereignty, demanding that the U.S. immediately provide proof that both are alive.
At the same time, an official source told CBS News, a U.S. partner of the BBC, that President Maduro was captured by Delta Force, the U.S. military's elite counter-terrorism special operations unit.
However, there has been no official confirmation from the U.S. government regarding details of the operation so far, amid concerns that tensions between the U.S. and Venezuela could escalate into a major security crisis in Latin America.
