Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs has called on the United States to provide an immediate explanation regarding the military attacks in Venezuela and reports of the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro.
On Saturday, 3 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs demanded an immediate explanation from the US concerning the situation in Venezuela, following the US launching attacks on multiple locations there and announcing the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who are reportedly being taken to the US for prosecution.
“We are deeply concerned about reports that Venezuelan President Maduro and his wife were forcibly removed from the country amid today's aggressive actions by the United States,” stated Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a statement. “We call for an immediate clarification of this situation.”
Russian authorities added that if these actions are true, they constitute an "unacceptable violation of the sovereignty of an independent state, as respect for sovereignty is a fundamental principle of international law."
Earlier, Russia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the US military operations against Venezuela, stating that any "pretext" used to justify these actions is "untenable."
Meanwhile, in recent months, the US has attacked dozens of ships in the Mediterranean, alleging they were transporting drugs from Venezuela into the US. These operations have resulted in over 110 deaths and the seizure of two oil tankers, which the US claims were carrying sanctioned Venezuelan oil.
