China Condemns U.S. for Attacking Venezuelan Sovereignty, Cites Violation of International Law

China issued a statement condemning the United States after its attack on Venezuela and the capture of President Maduro, describing it as an attack on sovereignty and a serious violation of international law.

On Saturday, 3 Jan 2026, China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs released a statement via X condemning the U.S. following a military operation in Venezuela that led to the arrest of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, who are being sent to the United States for prosecution.

"China is deeply shocked and strongly condemns the United States' blatant use of force against a sovereign state and actions against President Nicolás Maduro," said a spokesperson for China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs in a post on X.

"The U.S.'s overwhelming use of power constitutes a serious violation of international law and Venezuela's sovereignty, while also threatening peace and security in the Latin America and Caribbean region."

"China firmly opposes this and calls on the United States to comply with international law, including the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, and to cease violating the sovereignty and security of other countries," the spokesperson added.
