Donald Trump revealed the first photo of President Nicolás Maduro following the attack on Venezuela, showing Maduro detained on a warship en route to the United States.
On Saturday, 3 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, the US president, posted the first photo of Nicolás Maduro, Venezuela’s leader captured by the US, aboard the USS Iwo Jima after the US attacked Venezuela and detained him.
The photo shows Maduro wearing a gray Nike tracksuit, holding a water bottle, blindfolded with a black cloth, and wearing what appear to be large headphones over his ears. It is unclear if Maduro is near his wife, Cilia Flores, as she does not appear in the photo.
Trump previously confirmed that Maduro and his wife were being transported to the US aboard the USS Iwo Jima, a large multipurpose amphibious assault ship deployed in the Caribbean Sea to support the US Southern Command mission.
James Stavridis, former NATO Supreme Allied Commander, told CNN that based on Trump's photo, Maduro is likely detained in an officer’s state room, probably guarded by Marines at the door, with additional measures to ensure no items in the room could be used as weapons.
The retired admiral added that there are no clear guidelines for detaining a head of state on a Navy warship, so the ship’s captain is likely coordinating with the chain of command to decide the most appropriate detention location.
