Donald Trump revealed that many Cubans died during the U.S. operation to capture Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, pointing out that Cuba tried to protect its own source of income.
On 3 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Donald Trump, President of the United States, claimed that many Cubans died during a U.S. operation to capture Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela in the early morning (U.S. time), but he did not provide further details.
"Cuba has always depended on Venezuela; that is their source of income, and they try to protect Venezuela. But it did not go well in this case," Trump told the New York Post on Saturday. "You know, many Cubans died last night... They tried to protect Maduro. That was not a good decision."
Trump added that he did not know the exact number of casualties on the Cuban and Venezuelan forces' side.
The U.S. president confirmed that he has not considered military measures against Cuba, but said the country would "collapse on its own."
Earlier, Trump said no U.S. military personnel died during the operation to capture Maduro, while CNN reported, citing multiple sources, that some soldiers were injured by gunfire and shrapnel, but no fatalities occurred.
