Denmark's ambassador to the United States called on the U.S. to respect the territorial integrity of their lands after the wife of one of President Donald Trump's advisers posted a map of Greenland colored with the American flag.
Foreign news agencies reported on 4 Jan 2026 GMT+7 that Denmark demanded the United States respect the territorial integrity of its lands after the wife of a close adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump posted an image of Greenland's map in the colors of the American flag.
Kathy Miller, wife of the White House deputy chief of staff, posted the image of Greenland's territory on her X account on Saturday night, accompanied by the caption “SOON.”
Jens Moller Sorensen, Denmark's ambassador to the U.S., reposted the message, stating, “A friendly reminder to the United States and the Kingdom of Denmark: We are close allies and should continue to work together as such.”
Since returning to the presidency, Trump has repeatedly expressed his desire for Greenland, an autonomous Danish territory, to become part of the United States, citing its strategic location and rich mineral resources.
Trump recently appointed a special envoy to Greenland, who has clearly expressed intentions to bring Greenland under U.S. control, further angering Denmark, a NATO ally with a long-standing close relationship with the United States.
In his response post, Sorensen emphasized, “U.S. security is also the security of Greenland and Denmark. Greenland is already part of NATO. The Kingdom of Denmark and the United States work together to ensure security in the Arctic region.”
Sorensen also noted that Denmark significantly increased its defense budget in 2025 to $13.7 billion, which can be used in the Arctic and North Atlantic regions, as they take their shared security very seriously.
He added, “And of course, we fully expect respect for the territorial integrity of the Kingdom of Denmark.”
This exchange of posts occurred after the U.S. conducted a major military operation in Venezuela in the early hours of Saturday (local time), arresting President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, then extraditing them to the U.S. for prosecution.
Later, Trump stated that the U.S. would “administer” Venezuela until a safe transition of power could occur, while American oil companies would take control of Venezuela's energy infrastructure, especially its oil. Trump declared, “We are going to bring up enormous wealth from underground.”
