The son of Nicolás Maduro accused the United States of kidnapping his father and warned the international community that if they remain silent, such incidents could also happen to other countries.
Foreign news agencies reported that on Monday, 5 Jan 2026 GMT+7, Nicolás Maduro Guerra, son of the ousted former Venezuelan president Nicolás Maduro, said his father was "kidnapped" by the U.S. and called for international unity to allow his father to return to Venezuela.
Maduro Guerra made this statement during the opening of Venezuela's National Assembly, held two days after Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, were arrested in a U.S. military operation in Caracas the previous Saturday.
In his speech, Maduro Guerra described the operation as a violation of Venezuela's sovereignty and warned that such events could also happen to other countries.
"If we accept the kidnapping of a head of state as normal, no country will be safe. Today it is Venezuela; tomorrow it could be any country that refuses to submit. This is not a regional issue but a direct threat to global stability, humanity, and the equality of sovereignty among nations," Maduro Guerra said.
"To people worldwide, I say that international unity with Nicolás, Cilia, and Venezuela is not a political choice but a moral and legal duty. Silence in the face of these violations means complicity and weakens the international system that everyone claims to protect."
Maduro Guerra also addressed his inclusion in the latest U.S. indictment along with his father, his father's wife, and others on charges of drug and arms trafficking, which he denied, stating, "My family and I are being hunted."
