Gunfire Erupts Near Venezuelan Presidential Palace Media Suggest Possible Coup Attempt

Heavy gunfire erupted near the Presidential Palace in the heart of Caracas, Venezuela. Local media reported armed soldiers and armored vehicles stationed at several government buildings, suggesting a possible coup attempt.

Local media reported intense gunfire near Miraflores Palace, the Presidential Palace in downtown Caracas, Venezuela. Social media videos showed armed soldiers and armored vehicles deployed around various government buildings amid rumors of a possible coup attempt.

This incident occurred just days after Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro was reportedly arrested by U.S. special operations forces during a raid and taken, along with his wife Cilia Flores, to New York to face drug trafficking charges.

Reports indicated that, besides gunfire, there were explosions and anti-aircraft gunfire near the Presidential Palace. Meanwhile, AFP cited Venezuelan sources saying the situation was under control.

AFP sources added that security forces opened fire after detecting an unidentified drone flying over the Miraflores Palace.

This unrest happened after Delcy Rodríguez, Vice President and a close ally of Maduro, was appointed acting president. Rodríguez condemned the U.S. operation as an imperialist attack on Venezuela’s sovereignty.

At the same time, Russia and China condemned the U.S. operation. Russia’s UN Ambassador Vasily Nebenzia described the act as international piracy.
