Venezuela Reports 24 Security Officials Killed in U.S. Military Operation, Suggests Possible War Crimes

Venezuela has revealed that at least 56 people have died following a U.S. military operation to capture the country's leader, including 24 security officials. The Attorney General suggested the incident may amount to war crimes.

The Venezuelan military announced that at least 24 of the country's security personnel were killed in the U.S. military operation on Saturday, bringing the official death toll to at least 56.

An Associated Press report stated that the attack also caused additional civilian deaths. However, the exact number of civilian fatalities has yet to be confirmed.

Venezuela's Attorney General, Tarek William Saab, said on Tuesday that dozens of state officials and civilians died in the incident. He announced that the Attorney General's office will open an investigation, noting that the attack might constitute war crimes. Saab did not clarify whether the figures referred solely to Venezuelans or included foreigners.

Earlier, the Cuban government announced on Sunday that at least 32 Cuban soldiers and police officers serving in Venezuela died during the same military operation.

The Venezuelan military also shared a tribute video on Instagram honoring the fallen officials. The video shows faces of the deceased superimposed over black-and-white images of soldiers, U.S. warplanes flying over Caracas, and armored vehicles destroyed by explosions.

Additionally, in a press conference on Tuesday, Venezuela's Attorney General called for the unconditional release of President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
