UK Admits Assisting US in Seizing Russian-Flagged Oil Tanker in the Atlantic

The UK government has admitted to assisting the US in an operation to seize a Russian-flagged oil tanker in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean after a pursuit lasting two weeks.

On 7 Jan 2026, John Healey, the UK Secretary of State for Defence, stated that the UK supported US efforts to seize the Russian-flagged oil tanker in the North Atlantic Ocean, including providing support with Royal Air Force aircraft.

“Today, the UK military demonstrated its skill and professionalism by supporting the US operation and successfully intercepting the oil tanker ‘Bella 1’ as it was heading to Russia.”

“This operation is part of a global joint effort to crack down on networks violating sanctions.”

“The UK will continue to intensify actions against the activities of the ‘Shadow fleet’ to protect our national security, economy, and global stability, ensuring the UK remains safe domestically and strong internationally,” Healey said.

The Shadow fleet refers to a group of oil tankers with unclear ownership structures or that clandestinely change their ship’s nationality to evade international sanctions.

The US Coast Guard attempted to intercept the Bella 1 since December, but the vessel refused to allow officials to board for inspection. Since then, the ship changed its flag from Guyana to Russia to avoid sanctions.

Meanwhile, at a White House press briefing, Caroline Leavitt, the Trump administration’s media secretary, was asked about the seizure of two oil tankers on the same day. Leavitt said these ships are connected to sanction evasion and are part of the “Shadow fleet.”

Leavitt explained that the ship “Marinera,” formerly known as “Bella 1,” was subject to a court seizure warrant before the US took control of it in the North Atlantic. The warrant also covers the crew aboard the ship, who may face prosecution upon arrival in the US.

Regarding the “Sophia” ship seized in the Caribbean Sea, Leavitt said it is currently being escorted to the US by Coast Guard vessels.
