Indonesia has temporarily suspended access to Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok after the AI was used to generate pornographic images.
On Saturday, 10 Jan 2025 GMT+7, Indonesian authorities temporarily suspended access to Elon Musk's AI chatbot Grok amid concerns that the AI could be used to create pornographic content, making Indonesia the first country to block access to this AI.
This move follows condemnation from governments and regulators across several countries, from Europe to Asia, after Grok was used to easily manipulate images into pornographic content, with some countries initiating investigations.
“The government views the creation of manipulated pornographic images (deepfakes) without consent as a serious violation of human rights, dignity, and safety of people in the digital space,” said Mutia Hafid, Indonesia's Minister of Communication and Information Technology, in a statement.
xAI, the startup behind Grok, stated last Thursday that it is restricting image creation and editing features exclusively to paying subscribers while working to fix vulnerabilities in its safeguards that allowed sexually explicit images to be produced, including simulated images of children in provocative clothing.
The ministry also summoned representatives from X to discuss the issue, since Grok can access the latest data and trends on X in real time, and several images posted on X were used to create manipulated pornographic images.
Elon Musk posted on X that anyone using Grok to create illegal content will face consequences similar to those for users uploading illegal content to the platform.
