The U.S. military announced that, in cooperation with allies, it launched over 90 precision-guided munitions against the Islamic State armed group in Syria last Saturday in a retaliatory operation for Americans who were killed.
On Saturday, 10 Jan 2026 GMT+7, U.S. Central Command (Centcom) announced that the U.S. and allied forces resumed strikes against targets linked to the Islamic State armed group (ISIS) in Syria. This was in retaliation for an ambush on U.S. military forces in Syria that resulted in the deaths of three Americans on 13 Dec.
Centcom stated that these strikes are part of the "Hawkeye Strike" operation, aimed at counterterrorism and protecting U.S. and allied forces in the region.
"Our message remains firm and clear: If you harm our warriors, we will hunt you down and eliminate you wherever you are in the world, no matter how hard you try to evade justice," Centcom declared.
A U.S. official told CBS News that the U.S. and allied forces fired more than 90 precision-guided weapons at over 35 targets in an operation involving more than 20 aircraft.
The official added that aircraft involved included F-15E, A-10, AC-130J, MQ-9, and Jordanian F-16s. Details about the exact locations of the strikes and the extent of casualties remain unclear.
The U.S. government, under Donald Trump's leadership, launched the "Hawkeye Strike" operation initially in December after ISIS gunmen ambushed forces, killing two U.S. soldiers and an American civilian interpreter in Palmyra, located in central Syria.
U.S. officials revealed that before the recent Saturday strikes, U.S. forces had killed or captured nearly 25 ISIS members in 11 missions conducted between 20 and 29 Dec, also part of the "Hawkeye Strike" operation.
